Tammy Duckworth - Call to Action for Fellow Democratic Candidates

Kyrsten Sinema just announced yesterday that she is running against Senator Jeff Flake in Arizona. This is one of our greatest pickup opportunities in the Senate

Kyrsten's a fighter who knows how important the American Dream is. Growing up, she lived in an abandoned gas station without running water or electricity. Through the help of her community, Kyrsten made it to college and was able to accomplish her goals.

Kyrsten's running for Senate to help others get that same shot at the American Dream. Click here to chip in $5.

Doug Jones, candidate for Senate in Alabama, is also a fighter. Doug is a former U.S. attorney who prosecuted Ku Klux Klan members that bombed a church in Birmingham. His integrity, conviction, and passion are just what the country needs.

Both Doug and Kyrsten have uphill battles against the special interests. They need Team Duckworth's help.

Thanks,

Tammy

Frerichs for Illinois - Will you help?

Today, I need your help. I have been fighting for Illinois consumers since day 1 in office and I need your help to continue.

With a stroke of a pen, Governor Rauner chose to side with life insurance companies instead of grieving widows and orphans. Governor Rauner vetoed House Bill 302, which is an initiative of my office to ensure people are put before corporate profits.

House Bill 302 will require life insurance companies to search their files to identify policies that have not been paid to the rightful beneficiaries going back to the year 2000. Through audits, my office found over $550 million owed to Illinois residents that insurance companies had not paid.

I am now calling on Illinois lawmakers to override the veto because paying death benefits should not be a partisan issue. It is a matter of right and wrong.

Thank you for your support!

Mike

How you can help Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands

Last week, Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Thousands of people were injured or made homeless, and at least a dozen people lost their lives. This kind of tragedy affects whole communities, and our prayers are with all those suffering in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Now is the time to help our neighbors. There is a great deal being done to support the rescue teams and those suffering because of these natural disasters. Here are a few of the organizations doing wonderful work:
While Puerto Ricans and Virgin Islanders are United States citizens, President Trump has not effectively responded to this humanitarian disaster. Our country is stronger when we work together and support our fellow citizens, especially in difficult times. I hope you'll join me in helping our neighbors who are suffering.
Thank you,
JB

Senator Stadelman's Weekly Bulletin - September 25, 2017

New Stadelman law could help adults earn high school diplomas

Thousands of adults in Winnebago and Boone counties could receive the opportunity to earn high school diplomas as a result a new Illinois law that went into effect last week. Governor Bruce Rauner signed bipartisan legislation, sponsored in the Senate by Steve Stadelman, that allows anyone over 21 to earn a diploma rather than a General Educational Development (GED) certificate, which is easier to obtain but less meaningful in the job market.
Goodwill Industries, where the bill signing took place Friday, hopes to open a vocational school to award diplomas to adult learners now that Illinois no longer restricts them based on age.
"A high school diploma is nearly essential in today's world, but not everyone is able to complete high school in the same amount of time," Stadelman said. "These programs will give people a second chance and help them obtain job skills. Everyone benefits in the end, because a trained workforce is good for economic development in our communities."

Community colleges, along with non-profits like Goodwill, can establish diploma programs for adult learners under the new law.

Voting rights advanced with automatic voter registration

Illinois is now the 10th state in the nation to enact automatic voter registration, a good-government and voting-rights initiative supported by State Senator Steve Stadelman.
The measure establishes a more modern system by which eligible adults can have their voter registration information updated automatically whenever they interact with certain state agencies. Stadelman said he is proud of Illinois' progressive stand in a time when other states are moving instead to limit people's access to the polls.
"We should always strive to make it easier, not more difficult, to exercise our democratic rights, including the right to vote," Stadelman said. "Automatic voter registration also makes fiscal and common sense by improving the accuracy of our voting rolls and saving government millions of dollars once it's fully implemented."
An estimated 1 million new eligible voters will be added to the voter rolls in Illinois. Under the new law, people will be able to opt out of being registered to vote if they wish.

HoopStars scores big at Sports Factory
Senator Stadelman's HoopStars provided a positive, end-of-summer activity for a fifth year on Labor Day, drawing 275 young athletes to UW Health Sports Factory to compete in the free 3-on-3 basketball tournament for boys and girls in third through eighth grades. Two of the winning teams are pictured below.

Help contacting an engineer

Hi, not quite Democratic politics, but related to Democratic values of education and jobs...

My son Matt is considering going into an "engineering" field, planning his future college course work, and he'd like to speak with people working in various engineering jobs, current or retired.

Do we have any Dems out there willing to discuss their (or a friend or family member's) experience in engineering with my son Matt?

"I have a pre-existing condition" - Tammy

In case you haven't heard, Senate Republicans are mounting a last-ditch effort to squeeze in an Affordable Care Act repeal before the end of the month.

Much like last time, Senate Republicans are trying to rush through their new repeal of the ACA in the hopes Americans won't have a chance to fully grasp the shortfalls of their plan to replace it.

But they can't gloss over how bad it is. Republicans' plan gets rid of protections for people with pre-existing conditions -- people like Tammy.

It cuts Medicaid funding. And it would result in millions more Americans without health insurance.

You should also know that Republicans are pushing hard to get the 50 votes they need to pass it -- and they are coming precariously close. President Trump already said he would sign the bill if it makes it to his desk.

Tammy's out there working to protect our health care, and she needs to know that we're in her corner. Let's show her we're supporting her efforts by reaching our $15,000 FEC goal in time for the deadline.

Thank you,
Team Duckworth
