Shame on you, Governor – Illinois Senate Democrats

Friend,

Last Friday, while most hard working Illinoisans were preparing for a well-deserved weekend, Gov. Rauner used his veto power to block a trio of bills designed to make Illinois a better place to work and live.

With the stroke of a pen, Rauner showed his support for keeping low wage employees in poverty, keeping recent graduates in debt, and enabling employers to continue discriminatory policies against women.

Plain and simple; Bruce Rauner will always be on the side of billionaire CEO's and big banks, not the working people.

The Illinois Senate Democrats proudly stand for a $15/hour minimum wage, student loan reform, and gender pay equality. Chip in $15 to show Bruce Rauner and his billionaire buddies whose side you're on --

Hard working people who have been left behind need a raise, student borrowers deserve to know their rights, and women shouldn't be penalized for the sins of their previous employers.

Voting rights at risk – Tammy Duckworth

One of the most significant milestones in our nation's journey to equality was the passage of Voting Rights Act.

This journey was not an easy one. For decades, African Americans were subjected to widespread voter intimidation efforts and laws designed to keep them from the polls. But they refused to accept injustice.

Civil rights activists organized protests and courageously endured unspeakable acts of violence by those who wanted to disenfranchise them. Then in 1965, African Americans' heroic activism ushered in change.

President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act, which outlawed discriminatory voting practices and put protections in place to stop any attempts at discrimination in the future.

It's been 52 years since the Voting Rights Act became law. Yet sadly, we still can't take this fundamental right for granted. In 2013, the Supreme Court gutted a key protection in the Voting Rights Act.

Congress has the power to restore it, but President Trump has made it clear to his party that addressing voter suppression is not a priority. Instead, President Trump and his commission on "election integrity" prefer to investigate made-up claims of voter fraud. He wants to give the GOP justification for passing restrictive voting laws that unfairly target minorities.

Generations of civil rights activists risked their lives to secure the right to vote for all Americans. As a Veteran, I fought to defend this country and the democratic principles it was built on. We can't let our efforts be undermined.

Vow to speak out against any efforts to restrict access to the polls. Support Americans' right to vote.

Thank you,
Tammy

Wallace Bill to Establish Task Force on Opportunities for At-Risk Women Now Law

News…

                                           From State Representative Litesa Wallace
 For Immediate Release:

Wallace Bill to Establish Task Force on Opportunities for At-Risk Women Now Law

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Legislation sponsored by state Rep. Litesa Wallace, D-Rockford, to require appointments be made to the Task Force on Opportunities for At-Risk Women was signed into law on Thursday.

"This task force will review ways to improve the lives of at-risk women from around the state, as well suggest legislative ideas that can improve the well-being of women," Wallace said. "There are a number of underlying challenges these women face, and we have to do a better job of giving every resident the opportunity they deserve."

House Bill 457 mandates that appointments be made to the task force within 60 days of its passage into law, and will require the group to meet quarterly. The task force will focus on at-risk women, who are defined as individuals at greater risk due to the factors of poverty, abuse, addiction, financial challenges, illiteracy and other causes. Task force members will be charged with reviewing ways that state policy can affect these factors. Members of the review group will be appointed by the governor, legislative leaders and state agency leads.

"I appreciate the bipartisan support this measure received," Wallace said. "We need to prioritize our most vulnerable and give them a voice to improve their lives."

News From Senator Stadelman – HoopStars moves to Sports Factory

August 20, 2017
For Immediate Release

HoopStars moves to Sports Factory
Premiere venue offers quicker pace for tourney and room to grow

ROCKFORD – State Senator Steve Stadelman is again expanding his popular Labor Day basketball tournament, this time by moving to UW Health Sports Factory where boys and girls can compete in air-conditioned comfort and practice on warm-up courts.

Shorter waits between games also are expected when the 3-on-3 tournament crosses over from Davis Park, its home for three of the last four years. The event has drawn as many as 400 players in 3rd through 8th grades.

There is no cost to enter. Registration is open until Sept. 1 at www.senatorstadelman.com/hoopstars.

"Part of me will miss the street-tournament feel of being outdoors, but the benefits of a brand new, marquee facility right across the Rock River are undeniable," Stadelman said during a news conference today at the Sports Factory. "Without the continued support of the Rockford Park District and faithful financial contributors like ComEd and Comcast, this positive, end-of-summer activity for kids simply wouldn't be possible."

Stadelman said the event, which started in 2013 at Patriots Gateway, had outgrown the 10 makeshift courts at Davis Park.  With 16 courts now available, total play time in the single-elimination, two-game-minimum tournament should drop to four or five hours from six or more. Parents will find parking much easier, among other advantages of the new location.

All players receive free commemorative event T-shirts, and winning teams take home medals. Event sponsors operate interactive courtside information booths with giveaways, and refreshments are available for purchase.

Games begin at 1 p.m. with doors opening at noon following the Labor Day parade.
