Wallace Measure to Require Student Access to Feminine Hygiene Products to Take Effect Jan. 1
ROCKFORD, Ill. – A measure introduced by state Rep. Litesa Wallace, D-Rockford, which would require schools to have free feminine hygiene products available to students has been signed into law after bipartisan support.
"This is an important law that will assist young women across the state," Wallace said. "In the same way we expect to have toilet paper and soap in bathrooms, we should expect the same with feminine hygiene products."
Effective Jan. 1, 2018, Wallace's House Bill 3215 requires schools that serve students from grade six through 12 to have tampons or sanitary napkins freely available in bathrooms. The hygiene items will be available in dispensers and offered at no cost. The law mandates both public and charter schools to participate.
"Feminine hygiene products are a necessity for students, not a luxury," Wallace said. "This law will allow students not to miss class time and focus on their work."
